FAQ about the Yahoo! Maps for Broadband
How can locations be saved for later use? Click on the gray rectangle (with the triangle in it) at the right end of one of the entry boxes, such as the A entry box. Scroll down and you'll see
your address in the "Recent Locations" section. Highlight your address and select "Save". You can also click directly on the "Add Locations" link, to go to our location manager page. You
can only save locations if you're logged in with your Yahoo! ID.
How can an alternate route be determined? Intermediate waypoints can be set that force a different route. You can drag and drop the route itself, or you can add new addresses as stops
along the way. These can be specified either as an address or by right-clicking a point on the map.
If you already have A and B, then type the new location in C (don't hit Enter). Position the mouse over the C icon to the left of the entry field. You should see a pointing hand cursor. Hold
down the mouse button and move the mouse to "drag" the new address, moving it above the B entry field.
A waypoint can be added by right-clicking on the map. To start with, be sure to zoom in far enough that you click on the right road. Then right-click and choose Drive to here. The route will
end at the clicked point. Grab and drag the lettered icon next to the final entry box, moving it up in the route. Let go of the mouse button when you see a horizontal blue line above the entry
box at the desired position. You can rearrange a multi-point route using this same "drag and drop" technique.
How do I prevent the inset map from covering up important parts of the main map? The inset map (aka the mini-map) can be minimized by clicking on the chevron in the upper right. Click it
again to restore it.
How do I access Recent Locations? Recent Locations are available in the drop-down menu on the right side of the address entry boxes. Recent Locations will also appear below the entry
box if they match the address you've begun typing. Use the down-arrow key followed by Enter or click on the address to select it. After exiting the browser only the 5 most recently used
locations will be retained for the next browser session.
Why are my Recent Locations not being saved? Recent Locations are stored in browser cookies so having your browser's security settings too high may prevent Recent Locations from being
stored. Adjust the browser security settings to a lower setting to fix this problem.
How do I center the map at a given latitude and longitude? Enter the latitude and longitude into the A entry box separated by a comma and hit Enter or click Go. Positive latitudes are
North, negative latitudes are South, positive longitudes are East, negative longitudes are West.
How do I get a latitude and longitude for an address or location on the map? Latitude and Longitude are not regularly used by most users, but there is a trick. The center latitude and
longitude of the map appears in the URL. In addition, right-clicking on the map and selecting the "Drive from here" or "Drive to here" options will put the latitude and longitude of the clicked
position into the A entry box or next available entry box.
Using Local Search on Yahoo! Maps
Use the "A" box of Get Map and Directions to set your location by entering an address location and hitting enter or selecting the Go button.
Once you are satisfied with your search location, enter your search term in the Find on the map box.
Search terms can be specific business names, such as Joe's Pizza. a category such as florist, or free-form such as best margaritas.
Note: To quickly search for something outside of your current map area, use this search shortcut in the Find on the map box.
Empire State Building in New York, NY.
Yahoo! Maps will accept in and near witihin Find on a map, for most accurate results.
Yahoo! Maps? You Don’t Have to Ask.
I’m very happy to announce tonight that we have lifted many of the restrictions associated with the Yahoo! Maps APIs. Until today, the APIs were available only for non-commercial use
unless you applied for an exception. The concept of commercial and non-commercial has gone away and exceptions are no longer necessary in most cases. We have given you explicit
Usage Policies to help guide you.
Whether on your business website, blog or personal site, you no longer have to ask for permission. Feel free to:
Build Mashups and use our Maps for personal or business use as long as the applications are free of charge and under the rate limit.
Link to Yahoo! Maps or Driving Directions to your heart’s content.
Include advertising on the same page or site where you display Yahoo! Maps.
There are still some Usage Policy so make sure to have a look at those.
Finally, please make sure to register your application because we love to see all the exciting stuff you’re doing with our APIs. Should you ever need an exception for any reason the first step
is to register your app with us.

Yahoo Maps Adds To Local Business Coverage
Yahoo has made it easier to find local businesses using its free online mapping service, adding 300 new cities encompassing 12,000 neighborhoods to its most detailed maps, packaged in a
new, easier to use format which has added more information about points of interest and expanded global coverage.

Sunnyvale, California-based Internet pioneer Yahoo has made it easier to find local businesses using its free online mapping service, adding 300 new cities encompassing 12,000
neighborhoods to its most detailed maps, packaged in a new, easier to use format which has added more information about points of interest and expanded global coverage, the company
announced Wednesday. The update has changed several of the color combinations and shading techniques in order to make information on Yahoo Maps easier to read, in the company's
latest additions to its online mapping service which already offers such features as driving directions in the United States and 34 European countries, satellite images and terrain overlays.
Search Update with Vanessa Zamora
Greater Global Coverage Led By Eastern Europe
Map coverage of Eastern European countries has especially benefited from the latest changes within the Yahoo Maps service, although the upgrade expanded coverage worldwide,
according to Gus Maldonado, Yahoo Local and Maps senior product manager, writing on the company Web site Wednesday.
"Today, we’ve rolled out an update to Yahoo Maps that delivers a number of improvements including; new neighborhood data, expanded worldwide coverage, and stylistic improvements,"
Maldonado wrote in the announcement. Details of specific countries affected by the update were not disclosed, however all areas within Yahoo Maps use the new shading feature for better
map readability, Yahoo said.
More Detailed Neighborhood Information
Yahoo has increased the number of North American cities with detailed map coverage, which it calls "neighborhood data," by some 12,000 neighborhoods in 300 cities, according to
Maldonado. The increased level of detail at Yahoo Maps shows more local businesses and attractions when a map is zoomed in to the closest levels.
Among the new cities with more detailed neighborhood maps are Chicago, Toronto, Milwaukee, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Palo Alto, California, adding to Yahoo's list of neighborhood
and building footprints which began last year with New York City and San Francisco. Yahoo Maps users can search for neighborhoods by name, which are identified on the new city maps and
differentiated with colors, using names such as "Lower East Side," "Uptown," "Manhattan," or "Lower Collegetown," according to Maldonado.
More Schools and Points of Interest Added
Yahoo Maps has increased local business coverage and expanded the number of attractions and points of interest included in the cities and neighborhoods added Wednesday, Yahoo said.
Such attractions, ranging from schools and rest stops to ski resorts, were added to make the service more useful to Yahoo Maps customers.
In a further effort to make its map service easier to use, the labels used to identify cities have been changed to offer less interference to map viewers, who have in the past found certain city
labels to block out portions of maps.
Other legibility changes were made to Yahoo Maps in Wednesday's upgrade, including what Yahoo calls "Hybrid Road and Label" colors and lighter map titles, as part of style changes
intended to improve usability, Yahoo said. Title for cities and other map locations within Yahoo Maps have been reduced in size between 30 and 60 percent, Maldonado noted.
Yahoo Maps Adds To Local Business Coverage
Other Yahoo Web mapping services include a free tool that allows users to upload their own maps and pictures and add many of the features Yahoo Maps offers for its own maps, such as
zooming, panning and layering, in a beta test service Yahoo has called MapMixer.
Online mapping has been a popular use for the Web since the emergence of MapQuest in the 1990s, a map publishing firm that popularized Internet-accessible interactive maps. MapQuest,
which was acquired by America Online, Inc. in 2000, is still one of the top map Web sites, however it has faced increased competition from search engine leader Google, with its Google
Maps, Microsoft with its Live Search, and Ask.com with its Maps and Directions. Yahoo Maps has also become a major rival to MapQuest, especially among mobile users, and the new
features and expanded coverage added Wednesday by Yahoo are likely to be only the latest in an ongoing series of improvements.

News
On May 16, 2007, Yahoo! released a new map style designed by the cartography company Cartifact. Data and imagery were also supplied by Cartifact, including shaded relief showing land
surface features and land cover coloring indicating major environmental zones.
At some point before May 2007 maps of India were added to http://in.maps.yahoo.com which is a non Flash interface to Yahoo Maps. In addition to reasonably detailed Indian coverage (not
available through http://maps.yahoo.com), the site also allows a user to view maps for the rest of the world.
Available Services
The main Yahoo! Maps site offers street maps and driving directions for the United States and Canada. It has the following notable features:
Address Book: Registered Yahoo! users can store a list of commonly used street addresses, making it unnecessary to type them in again. A recently entered address can be quickly recalled by
selecting one from a drop-down list.
Live Traffic: Traffic incident markers and current highway conditions can be viewed on the map.
Point of Interest Finder: SmartView (tm) can be used to find businesses and other points of interest near the current location, with clickable icons that supply an address, a telephone number,
and links for more information.
Driving Directions: Driving directions can be displayed on a map or in printable form, with optional turn-by-turn maps, or as simple text. Links to driving directions can be e-mailed, and text
directions sent to mobile phones.
Yahoo! Local Maps Rich Internet Application
A new and improved Yahoo! Local Maps has been recently made available. It offers maps with significantly more interactivity for broadband users. It is written using AJAX, leveraging Rich
Internet Application techniques. Some features:
Draggable maps: The current map view can be manipulated by dragging it with the mouse or tapping the arrow keys. Zoom level can be controlled via the mouse scroll wheel, "Page
Up"/"Page Down" keys, or the map's zoom bar.
Multi-point driving directions: Multiple addresses can be entered and manually reordered for complex driving directions.
Find On The Map: A local search by business name or category can be typed into the "Find On The Map" box to locate it in the current map view. A list of clickable point of interest
categories is also available. The results can be further refined by user rating, or related category.
Widgets: A number of widgets over the map include a navigator widget, map type (map, satellite & hybrid) controller and a zoom level control.
Satellite Imagery: Labelled (hybrid) and unlabelled satellite imagery is available world-wide.
Overview map: Collapsible overview map provides context, with draggable grey area controlling the main map view.
International Coverage: Outside the US and Canada, Yahoo! Maps Beta can recognize city, province, and country names, and provide a small-scale map or satellite views.
Right click to set waypoint: an origin, destination, or midpoint can be set by right-clicking on the desired location on the map.
Draggable markers: Any marker can be dragged to the 'Get Map' text entry area to add that location to a route.
Live traffic, address book, and send to phone features are also available.
Yahoo! Map Web Services
Developers can embed Yahoo! Maps into their own web pages (to create a mashup) through the Yahoo! Maps Developer APIs. Many exciting new web sites have come about recently by
displaying content from other sources on top of maps provided by the various mapping portals (the Google Maps API getting the most publicity). The Yahoo! Maps APIs come in three basic
flavors:
The Flash APIs, that use the Adobe Flash platform. Three variations, allowing the developer to write in JavaScript, ActionScript, or Adobe Flex 1.5, are available.
The Ajax API, for interactive maps that use capabilities inherent in web browsers, without using the Flash plug-in. Ajax applications are written in JavaScript.
The "Simple" API. The Simple API is basically an XML data format, an extension of GeoRSS, for displaying point of interest data on top of Yahoo!'s main map site. The Flash and Ajax APIs
also support display of GeoRSS formatted data.
Yahoo! offers a number of low-level APIs to support maps, for geocoding, getting a map image, searching for a local business, or retrieving traffic information. Some other Yahoo! services,
such as Flickr and Upcoming.org, have their content available through web services, with interesting potential for mashups.
Map Data
The street network and other vector data Yahoo! maps uses is from Navteq, Tele Atlas, and public domain sources. Detailed street network data is currently available for the United States,
Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and most European countries. Country borders, cities, and water bodies are mapped for the rest of the world.
Moderate resolution satellite imagery is available world-wide. 1-2 meter resolution is available for most of the contiguous United States, and select cities worldwide.
Popular culture
In the SNL Digital Short Lazy Sunday starring Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell, the two comedians rap about a trip to the movies and discuss MapQuest, Yahoo! Maps, and Google Maps.
