Business Listing Quality Guidelines
Local Business Center Guidelines

General Information:

Google Maps is intended to be a source of information for users and business owners alike. We've implemented a number of guidelines that align with these intentions. If you submit any business listing to Google Maps through the Local Business Center, you must comply with the quality guidelines below.

Quality Guidelines:

The following items outline practices that could result in your business listings being permanently removed from Google Maps. While they cover the most common practices to avoid, Google may respond negatively to other practices not listed here. If you have any question about whether or not a tactic is deceptive, we recommend you stand on the side of caution.

Represent your business exactly as it appears in real life. The name on Google Maps should match the business name, as should the address, phone number and website.
List information that provides as direct a path to the business as you can. Given the choice, you may want to list individual location phone numbers over a central phone line, official website pages rather than a directory page, and as exact of an address as you can.

Only include listings for businesses that you represent.
Don't participate in any behavior with the intention or result of listing your business more times than it exists. Service area businesses, for example, should not create a listing for every town they service. Likewise, law firms or doctors should not create multiple listings to cover all of their specialties.

Use the description and custom attribute fields to include additional information about your listing. This type of content should never appear in your business's title or address fields.

If you believe that another business is abusing Google's quality guidelines, please report the listing at http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Maps-For-Business-Owners.

In the case that your listings have been removed from Google Maps, we recommend you adjust them in your account to comply with the quality guidelines. You'll then need to fill out a reinclusion request.

Please note that we won't necessarily respond to each individual request.

Your business information on Google Maps:

Should you have questions about how to add or edit your business information, please visit the Google Maps Help Center to learn how you can:
Submit your business at http://www.google.com/local/add.
Edit your information as necessary through your business listing's "Edit" link in Google Maps.
Google Maps Community Guidelines
Google Maps contains a variety of features that enables you to create and share information about your world. Whether you’re creating a map of your favorite hiking trails in My Maps, submitting a review of a restaurant, or moving the location of a local business to a more accurate position on the map, you are helping other members of the Google Maps community discover that world.

Each of these new features on Google Maps involves a certain level of trust that the information you share is appropriate.

When material within the service - such as a map, review, or user edit - is flagged as inappropriate, we review it to determine whether it violates our Terms of Service. If we remove the material you can assume that we removed it deliberately. If you find other materials on Google Maps with the same violations, please flag them so we can review them too. Additionally, certain community features of Google Maps are moderated, so your contribution may not be reflected in the service if it violates the Terms of Service or guidelines.

Here is a summary of some common-sense rules that will help you enjoy the community features of Google Maps:

Users benefit when the information in Google Maps is current and local; don’t undermine other users’ experience by attempting to move a location or update information inaccurately.

Everyone hates spam. Do not create misleading entries for businesses or other points of interest in the service.

Do not attempt to add information or edit existing information in the service to describe or promote illegal activities.

We have zero tolerance for use of the service for predatory behavior, stalking, threats, harassment, or revealing the personal information of others. Anyone caught doing these things may be permanently banned from Google Maps.

Respect copyright. Only use or submit information that you created yourself or that you have obtained the rights to use.

Please take these rules seriously - violations of the Terms of Service may result in a warning notification or may result in termination of your account and deletion of your submitted content.

Permission Guidelines for Google Maps and Google Earth

If you are a licensee of Google Maps and/or Google Earth and wish to use our product(s) in marketing and promotional materials, books, journals, online video streaming, playbacks, labels, packaging or various commercial products, or in any other media, please follow the guidelines in the Google Maps Terms of Use, Google Maps API Terms of Use, and Google Earth End User License – each of these terms of service is an agreement between you and Google about how you may make use of the product, including the content (such as imagery, maps, and local search results) presented in it.

In many cases, as long as you're not violating Google's terms of service, the concept of 'fair use' applies. This content is owned either by Google or its licensors. In certain circumstances, Google may be able to grant you a further license to use the content in a manner not covered by 'fair use' and not described in the terms of service. These guidelines contain further descriptions of permissions relating to the use of content outside of Google Maps, the Google Maps API and Google Earth.

Attribution requirements
All uses of Google Maps and Google Earth must provide attribution to Google and our content providers similar to what is shown to the users of our products today. You may not modify, minimize or obstruct copyright attribution text or the Google logo by any means. The attribution text must be legible and must use a font size of 6 points or greater. If for some reason this cannot be done in a screen shot, separate attribution text must be provided in a reasonably apparent location with special permission.

Permitted - Screenshot examples with attribution

Copyright attribution text and Google logo must be visible inside the screen and cannot be obstructed or modified by any means.

For your website
We provide Google mapping technology for web developers to add dynamic content on their website. If you are interested in learning more about developing your own mashup, feel free to refer to the Google Maps API or Google Earth API. Note that the Google Maps and Google Earth API can be used for any site that is accessible to consumers and end users without charge. If you want to create a mashup without using JavaScript, we recommend using the Static Maps API which can also be used for printing. If you are a business owner or a developer interested in higher-
volume use of the Google Maps API that requires a fee, please refer to Google Maps API Premier for more information.

Unfortunately, we do not have rights to grant you permission to use Google Maps and Google Earth in this manner. If you have a special request or additional questions, please fill out the Geo Permissions form.

I've read the permissions guidelines for Google Maps and Google Earth and am trying to determine whether my use of content is a 'fair use.' Can you please define 'fair use'?
Fair use is a concept under copyright law in the United States that, generally speaking, permits you to use a copyrighted work in certain ways without obtaining a license from the copyright holder. There are a variety of factors that affect whether or not your use of content would be considered a fair use, including the purpose and character of your use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount of the copyrighted material used, and the effect of your use upon the potential market for the copyrighted work. For example, there are differences between use in a for-fee service and use in a work of scholarship, or the use of a single map screenshot and the use of a detailed map image for an entire country. There are similar, although generally more limited, concepts in other countries' copyright laws, including a concept known as 'fair dealing' in a number of countries.

Google cannot tell you if your use of copyrighted material from our products would be a 'fair use' or would be considered 'fair dealing'; fair use is a concept that you need to work out depending on the circumstances of the use. We suggest you speak with an attorney if you have questions regarding fair use of copyrighted works.

For technical questions, please refer to our online help center for Google Maps and Google Earth.

If your questions are not addressed in the permissions guidelines for Google Maps and Google Earth as mentioned on this website or, if you're interested in co-marketing or partnership opportunities, please contact Geo Permissions.
